Photosynth: A Totally New Way to Explore Photography
Posted by: Craig in Brilliant Idea!, Computers, InternetOkay, I’m not a huge Microsoft fan. I get tired of the constant updates to my operating system and to be honest, it often feels like they get more wrong than they get right. When Microsoft acquired SeaDragon, it wasn’t big news. I doubt anyone outside of the Seattle area or some scholarly fields had even heard about SeaDragon. That’s how I heard about SeaDragon - through a professor at Michigan State. But their technology was just brilliant - scalable browsing of images as they relate to tags on those images. Imagine all the images on Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa or any of the other free image hosting sites linked by their tags. Then link those images by how the images inter-relate. And then browsing those images in a quasi-3D environment. That (and just a little bit more) is Photosynth. Something Microsoft got very much right.
You can demo Photosynth for yourself if your system fits within their current limitations.
